Week 2 Continued ....

One of the big issues to learn about is the dynamic range of the light in any photo... the camera sensor (or film) has only so much range between shadows and highlights, after which, it drops off or clips or "blows out" or "blocks up"... as we go out shooting, we lean to avoid situations where the dynamic range of the light in a particular scene exceeds the range of the sensor. The best way to learn what will work is to squint hard at the scene you are about to photograph... the bright areas will get brighter, the dark areas darker... Then ask, " is the focal point the source of light in this image?" Take the 2nd one down form the top... Had you squinted at the tower you would see it drop out to black as the light in the sky took over. A good strategy is to avoid including sky in your pictures unless the shot is about the sky. Good photography begins by making everything count and having light serve the focal point. I will post a couple of images above to show you what I mean...
